PhD in Leadership Studies Program objectives: • Promote academic excellence and facilitate the strengthening of conceptual, scholarly, and professional competencies for use in leadership roles that serve others. • Examine the complexities associated with leadership, the conditions under which they occur from the traditional approaches to transformational leadership concepts. • Study leadership through a broad, multidisciplinary approach and analyze concepts, theories, and practices required by leaders in the global environment to advance organizational success. • Develop leadership knowledge, skills and competencies through a comprehensive program of theoretical study backed by practical experience and analysis. Program Rationale There are leadership gaps in the following domains of society - Theology, Education, Governance, Media, Business, and Family. These leadership areas are not adequately addressed by many programs. Therefore, the rationale of this program is to: 1. Expand scholarly perspectives in the various domains of society.
2. Build on the foundation of knowledge gained at undergraduate and Masters level to bring change to society.
3. Address the lack of contextualized African realities in advanced academic programs on leadership development.
4. This program is expected to address this deficiency by creating elaborate basis of practice and experience. Program Output This four year program will endeavor to ensure that graduates are able to undertake comprehensive research, academic writing, train others, solve problems, demonstrate competencies and skills, and make validated critical decisions that are Christ-centered. General Program Pre-requisites Applicants who lack the necessary prerequisites will be required to take the relevant courses. Program concentrations will have five foundational pre-requisite courses that need to be completed by the end of the first year of the program if the applicant does not have a masters degree in the concentration Program Concentrations Specially designed to address the issues of governance, education, Christian ministry, communication, private and civil society sectors the program will address these through the following concentrations: 1. Educational Leadership
The program targets individuals in leadership in educational institutions and policy-making agencies that support educational programs to meet the challenges of contemporary leadership in the field of education both in the private and public sectors. 2. Christian Ministry
The program has been designed to expand the capacity of Christian leaders and professionals in ministry who are in demand in a variety of church and ministry settings. 3. Public Governance The program has been designed for administrators, parliamentarians, managers, professionals from the public, private and non-governmental sectors and will focus on issues of governance and analyze how society deals with the challenges of governance. 4.Corporate Leadership The program will develop skills and competencies in corporate and business leaders and professionals, who seek to improve organizational effectiveness, enhance decision-making skills, develop analysis, and research expertise. Program Schedule Program sessions are organized every six months and will cover: • Year One
Course work - each session will comprise three core courses and one seminar. • Year Two
Course work - each session will comprise three core courses and two seminars. • Year Three
An online course, comprehensive exams, proposal defense, assignment of mentors and dissertation writing. • Year Four
Dissertation writing, defense and graduation. Admission Requirements A Masters degree from a recognized university in the area of study or its equivalent. NIST/ILU programs integrate faith and learning, and are value-based and culturally relevant; promoting innovative and holistic problem-solving, community building and resource development. Application Fee – US $ 100 Application Deadlines For September intake the deadline is February 29th, 2012. • Qualifying Exams - March 15, 2012. • Notification of Acceptance - May 21, 2012 • Core Program pre-requisite courses - June –July 2012 except for those who will be doing their concentration pre-requisites.
